FAQS
Do you sell other varieties of trilliums?
No, we stock solely the rare T.grandiflorum plena aka white bunting, snow bunting or double bunting
How much is your T.grandiflorum plena?
We offerstock ($25) with 1 flowering head (both will grow and offer more flowering heads if well cared for).
Postage varies but averages at around $15 for up to 3 plants.
Can you guarantee my trillium will flower?
Only Mother Nature can guarantee that, however only supply plants that have flowered the previous season. Please check out our video on sulking trilliums on our facebook page for more information.
Do the white buntings require a frost to thrive?
The t.grandiflorum plena is a woodland plant from New York state. It requires a dormant winter chilling period. We are currently trialling a growing period of our stock in the Bay of Islands.
Where should I plant my white bunting?
Choose a woodland environment with approximately 35% sunshine in either the morning or afternoon. We recommend you plants with good drainage and plenty of humus, and moderate moisture and sunlight. Plant top of rhizome 2 inch (50mm) below the surface.
Why has my T.grandiflorum plena’s turned pink?
As the blooms mature they take on a stunning pink tinge around the edges before fading away.
Why are your T.grandiflorum plena’s so unique?
Our stock has been cultivated from one rhizome purchased back in 1984 by Maryed Urquhart. 40 years down the track, and after much careful division and care, we are now able to offer this rare beauty to the public. It has been a labour of love, and we feel proud to be one of very few stockists of this variety, globally.
Can I pick up my order from your nursery in Lake Hāwea?
Yes, orders can be collected by appointment. Please email us at nztrilliumstockist@gmail.com to arrange this or PM us via our Facebook page
Can you post my order to me?
Yes, we can post orders from March through to September when stock is dormant. Outside of these months we refrain from posting as stock is fragile and may not regenerate where damage has occurred (due to rough handling in post).
Can I pick the flowers when my trillium is blooming?
We recommend you do not pick the flowers or break the foliage on your t.grandiflorum plena. A hybrid, from New York State, these rare beauties feed back on the flowers and foliage to provide the energy for the next seasons flowering. In their native habitat they have shown to be slow to regenerate if nibbled by deer or if stood on.
Why have I got black spots on my leaves?
The white bunting flowers in October/November and dies off completely in December as it moves into dormancy during March to September. Flowers take on a pink tinge as they mature, and leaves start to gather black spots and look rather unimpressive. At this point they are feeding back off the foliage to gain energy for the next year's growing season, This is a good time to mark where in the garden your trillium lives so you don't risk stepping on the new dormant shoots that are preparing to rise in Spring.
Is the t.grandiflorum plena a rhizome or a bulb?
It is a rhizome. The single form can be grown from seed and may take up to 8 years to flower, however the double form is a chance seedling discovered in the wild and is sterile. It can only be grown through division.
What other names is the t.grandiflorum plena known by?
White bunting, Snow bunting, Wake Robin and Double white.
